Schistosomiasis and its intermediate hosts in the Lesser Antillean islands of the Caribbean.

چکیده
The discontinuous distribution of Schistosoma mansoni in the Caribbean islands results from accidents of history, geography, and the migration of both infected people and intermediate host snails. The spread of infection requires the presence of infected people, a susceptible snail host, poor sanitation, and human dependence upon snail-infested water. The various Caribbean countries differ in these regards, and the relationships between the various critical factors determine whether and to what extent the disease exists. Sturrock and Sturrock (I) cite reports of transmission in the following places: the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Vieques, St. Maarten, St. Kitts, Montserrat, Antigua, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Saint Lucia in the Caribbean and Venezuela and Suriname on the South American mainland. Ferguson et al. (2,3) report that the infection has been eliminated from St. Kitts and Vieques. Of the remaining places, Trinidad, Grenada, Barbados, and St. Vincent are apparently free of Biomphalariu glubrata (the most important snail host in the area), although B. straminea is present in Trinidad and Grenada. Sturrock and Sturrock (I) showed that B. glubrata from Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and French Guiana were susceptible to St. Lucian S. mansoni, although the snails from French Guiana

Evolutionary consequences of ecological release in Caribbean Anolis lizards
On the large islands of the Greater Antilles, multi-species communities oí Anolis lizards are composed of species specialized to use particular habitats; simUar sets of specialized species have evolved independently on each island. We studied species of anoles found on small Caribbean islands. Because these islands contain at most only one other species of anole, we predicted that species on th...

For many coastal countries, maritime supremacy has always been a major concern of their grand strategies. The existence of islands is one of the most important means to acquisition of maritime supremacy in maritime territories. Iran, Due to its maritime position, has many islands in the Persian Gulf, the most important of which are the Triple islands (Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa). T...

متن کاملEvolutionary history of Caribbean species of Myotis, with evidence of a third Lesser Antillean endemic
Currently, four species of Myotis are known from the islands of the Caribbean (Myotis dominicensis, M. martiniquensis, M. nesopolus, and M. nigricans). Myotis dominicensis and M. martiniquensis are endemic to the Lesser Antilles, whereas M. nesopolus and M. nigricans are considered conspecific with mainland populations. Recent phylogenetic and phylogeographic studies provided hypotheses regardi...
متن کاملMolecular Systematics and Biogeography of Antillean Thrashers, Tremblers, and Mockingbirds (aves: Mimidae)
—We constructed phylogenetic hypotheses for Greater and Lesser Antillean Mimidae, including five endemic species of tremblers and thrashers that represent the best plausible example of an avian radiation within the Lesser Antilles. Phylogenetic relationships were inferred from analysis of 3,491 base pairs (bp) of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and roughly 780 bp of the nuclear-encoded myoglobin gene...
